Internships

Over the past two semesters I have had the privilege of learning and working in two different internships. This semester I have worked with the Small Business Development Center as a Social Media and Graphic design intern. I have worked closely with different small businesses in the Upper Cumberland to help them grow their social media and create content that their customers would interact with. One example of this is having the honor of creating a blog post for the Cookeville Chamber of Commerce. My task was to help families find safe, socially distanced Christmas activities in our community during the pandemic. The blog was not only posted on the Cookeville Chamber of Commerce website, but was posted on all platforms and had a large community response. My internship experience along with my marketing strategy class has taught me more than I could have wished about the workplace and allowed me to recognize my strengths. My internship at the SBDC included many teamwork opportunities in which I worked closely with other interns collaborating on projects to help our clients grow their business and improve their social media presence.  This has allowed me to learn to work with people who have different personalities and working styles, which will be extremely beneficial to me in the real world. My internship experience has also taught me so much about leadership skills.  I have grown more confident in my abilities in the workplace. The combination of my classes and internship opportunities has allowed me to identify one of my strengths is communication. I can lead a meeting, making sure everything stays on track, and goals are achieved.  I have also learned that it is important to listen first to the customer's needs and then translate that into design.  My classes here at Tennessee Technological University have taught me so much about marketing and leadership, but this internship has given me real-world experience that I could not have gotten in the classroom.
